Democrats and Republicans in Congress may not have much in common, but most agree on one thing: It's illegal and immoral to pirate material on the Internet.
Apparently, they agree on one other thing: It's fun to pirate material from the Internet!
A website that tracks downloading activity shows that more than 800 computers registered to the U.S. House have been used over the last few months to illegally grab TV shows, movies, video games, music, software, books — and yes, plenty of porn.
Ironic, isn't it, that over the last few months the House has been discussing the proposed Stop Online Piracy Act, which would empower copyright holders to block access to websites they accuse of "facilitating" piracy.
Now, the pirated downloads can't be traced to specific congressmen, but can be traced to the House. The website youhavedownloaded.com reports the activity linked to Internet Protocol addresses. In this case, the 800 IP addresses are registered to the House. It could have been a congressman or a staffer or a visitor who illegally downloaded Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band's Greatest Hits on a government computer.
And who illegally downloaded Season Five of "Dexter"? Bad, bad, bad.
Bad, and hypocritical if it was someone who has been pushing for passage of the anti-piracy act. There are a lot of legitimate concerns about the disturbingly broad reach of that legislation, which would hamper the whole infrastructure of online information sharing.
The folks on Capitol Hill should spend more time familiarizing themselves with the ramifications of the anti-piracy act and less time watching illegal copies of "Rise of the Planet of the Apes."

Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat band News: Gordon Goodwin’s Little Phat band (7 piece instead of 18) will be playing at the 18th annual Idyllwild Jazz in the Pines, August 28th, 2011.

When one of this country's greatest composers died too young, he was only 39, novelist John O'Hara said: George Gershwin died on July 11, 1937, but I don't have to believe it if I don't want to. As is true for so many top artists, Gershwin's works; his popular songs, his opera "Porgy and Bess," and his classical jazz compositions live on.

NPR special correspondent Susan Stamberg says there is a new version of one of Gershwin's best-loved orchestral works, arranged for a big, brassy band.
